The promotion of healthy blood cholesterol has become a national obsession resulting in the sale of billions of dollars worth of cholesterol lowering drugs, mainly of the statin type. Lowering blood cholesterol with statin drugs in groups of individuals that are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke is documented to be cost effective and appropriate in medical practice.
